What Is BMI (Body Mass Index)?

BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a widely used health indicator that measures the relationship between your weight and height. It helps estimate whether your weight is within a healthy range. BMI is an important screening tool for identifying potential health risks associated with being underweight, overweight, or obese.

BMI Categories Explained

Once you calculate your BMI, you will fall into one of these categories:

Underweight (BMI < 18.5)

You may need to gain healthy weight. Consult a nutrition specialist.

Normal Weight (BMI 18.5 – 24.9)

This is considered a healthy weight range for most adults.

Overweight (BMI 25 – 29.9)

Extra weight may increase health risks. Balanced diet and exercise help.

Obese (BMI 30+)

High BMI can increase the risk of chronic diseases. Lifestyle changes are recommended.

BMI Formula

1. BMI Formula (Metric - cm & kg)

BMI = weight (kg) / height (m²)

Example: If your height is 170cm → convert to meters → 1.70m Then: BMI = weight / (1.70 × 1.70)

2. BMI Formula (Imperial - ft/in & lbs)

BMI = (weight (lbs) × 703) / height (in²)

Why Is BMI Important?

BMI is useful because it helps you:

  • Understand your overall health level
  • Identify if your weight is in a healthy range
  • Monitor changes in weight over time
  • Reduce risks of heart disease, diabetes, and obesity

Limitations of BMI

While BMI is a helpful screening tool, it does not measure body fat directly. Factors like age, muscle mass, gender, and bone density can influence BMI.

Athletes, for example, may have a high BMI but low body fat because muscle is heavier than fat.
